The Bloodhound ancestry can be traced back to approximately 11th century. Some say that the breed was found in the Mediterranean regions long before the Christian era; other sources say it was found in Europe many years before the Crusades and that the first breeds was brought there from Constantinople.
It was believed that there were two varieties of the bloodhound; the black variety was called the "Flemish Hound" and the white variety was called the "Talbot Hound". Another source says it is also known as the "Chien de Saint Hubert." History says that William the Conqueror brought the black variety to England in the year 1066. England developed a breed for pack hunting where the name bloodhound was derived from the term "blooded hounds" which refers to "hound of pure or noble blood." The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885.
Bloodhounds usually weigh from 80-110 pounds, although some of those can weigh as much as 160 pounds. They stand 23 to 27 inches high. It is a massive dog with unusually large skeletal structure and most of their weight focused in their bones. Eyes are deeply sunken and are diamond in shape. Bloodhounds are also known for their long and drooping ears. According to the breed standard provided by the AKC, the accepted bloodhound colors are black or liver with tan or red.

Bloodhounds are kind and patient. They are also known for being gentle and very noble. In addition, this dog is lovable and mild-mannered. It is affectionate and good -natured which makes it suitable for families with children in their home (although supervision of an adult is advised because children might inflict pain which might be disturbing for the dog). An owner showing a calm, but authoritative voice will bring out a streak of cooperation.
Bloodhounds are loyal, but can be very protective. These dogs are "droolers" and have a tendency to snore and sometimes howl. They don't bark that much but the noise that they make, once stimulated, is superb.
This kind of breed is difficult to train, since these dogs are great for tracking animals, humans or things once they catch a scent it is quite difficult to redirect their attention back to its master. In fact, they can follow trails that may be one hundred hours old and can stay on such trail for 100 miles or more; this tracker ability is rare in a dog.
Bloodhounds are widely used for rescue operations and criminal searches; in addition to that, the evidence produced by bloodhounds is admissible in court in many states. This animal should not be kept in a yard with no fence because there is a good chance its instinct will lead them to wander away to follow a trail.
The life expectancy of a bloodhound is about 10-12 years of age.
